Experience the Jacksonville area through optional tours

One of the great things about National Convention and Symposium is the opportunity to explore the host city with professional guides. Join fellow Exchangites and guests on the optional tours set up just for you! The tours include deluxe round-trip transportation, an escort or certified tour guide, and all applicable admissions, including taxes. Listed times below indicate when tours depart and return to the hotel. Meals are included in tour price only when noted. Tours may be cancelled if the minimum number of tour guests is not reached. Sign up for tours on the Convention Registration Form. Tour reservations are due by June 22, 2009.

Welcome to Jacksonville
Monday, July 13, 1:30 – 4 p.m.

Board a deluxe motor coach for your delightful narrated drive-by windshield tour of the “River City.” Fascinating stories and amusing anecdotes give you a unique perspective on Jacksonville and its history. Learn about the Timuquan, the area’s first inhabitants, French and Spanish colonization 55 years before the Pilgrims landed in the new world, and the Great Fire of 1901. See the one-of-a-kind Memorial Wall, the Old Gator Bowl Stadium, the Florida Theatre, Treaty Oak, and much more of the downtown area. Also included in the tour: the first Florida condos, Bryson Residence (also known as Marble House for the marble quarried from Georgia), The Leon Cheek residence built in 1928 (Cheek was head of the Cheek and Niel Coffee company, known today as Maxwell House). The motor coach will also drive by seven historical homes.

St. Augustine
Tuesday, July 14, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Did you know that the area’s beaches are on a barrier island? Join the group as they take the scenic A1A Highway along the barrier island down to St. Augustine. Enjoy the narration and history about the area along the way and learn how St. Augustine became the oldest continuously occupied city. The group will get a drive-by with narration and history of the Fountain of Youth, Old Jail, Mission of Nombre de Dios (shrine where the first Catholic mass was celebrated), Castillo de San Marcos (the nation’s oldest monument), and much more! The tour will also include Magnolia Street, listed by National Geographic as one of the most beautiful streets in America. The group will learn about Henry Flagler and his three wives. Free time is built into the day for shopping and lunch on your own on St. George Street. The coach will depart at 3 p.m. for the ride back to the hotel.

World Golf Hall of Fame
Tuesday, July 14, 1 – 6 p.m.

Amelia Island
Wednesday, July 15, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Join the group on a day of island-hopping-by-motor-coach—from Ft. George Island to Little Talbot Island to Big Talbot Island to Amelia Island—up the scenic A1A Highway (part of the Great Florida Birding Trail). The group will enjoy narrative talk from the guide along the way and stops at the Kingsley Plantation and American Beach. Homes on Amelia Island date back as far as 1800. The tour will drive by some of the most unusual homes and businesses, so be sure to bring your camera! Lunch is on your own, with free time for shopping.

Cost per person: $58
