The Exchange Club of Lawrence is set to present Lazarus House Executive Director Bridget Shaheen with its Book of Golden Deeds Award on Tuesday for her “outstanding service” to the greater Lawrence community.
The Book of Golden Deeds Award is presented to individuals who have given themselves for the benefit of their communities, and whose efforts often go unrecognized, according to the Exchange Club.
Shaheen became involved with the Lazarus House when it was founded as a 5-bed emergency shelter in 1983. She has served as its executive director since 1993.
Under her leadership, the shelter has grown to provide more than 40 beds. It now provides care including a soup kitchen, food pantry, advocacy services, transitional housing programs, ESOL, education, and work preparation programs such as office and industrial cleaning, and a culinary program with on-the-job training.
